"General practice provides good 'generalist' training and I am able to focus on particular areas that would be helpful for work overseas, such as HIV medicine. I like the fact I can sub-specialise in particular areas of interest - such as women's health, HIV medicine, whatever you like really!"

Certainly Dr Le appreciates the lifestyle offered by general practice. The hours are structured, so he has more control over his personal life while still establishing a solid career. "I know I can be home to have dinner with my wife every Night."

Any perceptions that general practice was a 'soft' and unfulfilling option for medicos has been well and truly put to rest as far as Kirsty Jennings is concerned. In fact, since seeing the light in regard to general practice, Kirsty says she has not looked back.

"Getting to know my patients and seeing problems in the context of their life and how issues develop or resolve over time is one of the things I enjoy most about being a GP registrar."

"I chose General Practice because I wanted an area of medicine which provided a lot of variety and challenge and involved prevention and wellness as well as illness and ongoing review of patients," Rachel says.

"A highlight during the GP program has been becoming a Registrar Liaison Officer for VMA and seeing all the hard work and passion people put in behind the scenes in providing good training for GP Registrars."

"As much as anything, I like the philosophy of general practice, connecting with people in their community and understanding them on many different levels and over time,” he says. “Portability of skills and the scope to work in many different situations and places are real attractions."
